In 1492 the Muslim Kingdom of Granada fell to the onslaught of the Spanish Catholic monarchs Ferdinand and Isabella. This conquest solidified the unity of the Kingdom of Spain and was also a religious victory. Christians sought revenge against Muslims and carried out a crusade that started in Spain and moved across the Mediterranean to the shores of North Africa. In her last will and testament of 1504, Queen Isabella called for uninterrupted war against the Muslim infidels, a conquest helped by the fragmentation of the Maghrib into small rival states. Immediately after the fall of Granada, a military expeditions was dispatched to the Algerian coast. Cardinal Ximenes de Cisneros, adviser and minister to King Ferdinand the Catholic, had long wanted to pursue a Spanish crusade into Africa. He dreamed of large military establishments on the southern coast of the Mediterranean and by 1505 the port of Mers-el-Kebir was captured by the Spaniards. Four years later in 1509, Ximenes personally attacked the city of Oran. Spain unleashed all its power against North Africa. Nothing and no one could resist the Spanish forces and the Christian conquest proceeded swiftly. Pedro Navarro seized Bejaia, destroyed Tripoli, obtained the submission of Dellys, Tenes, Algiers, and finally Tlemcen, as each North African city in succession was compelled to recognize the authority of the King of Spain.
